Kitchen is too dark and I have no idea where to even start with lighting

Our kitchen has one sad ceiling fixture in the middle and it casts shadows everywhere, so I’m constantly chopping vegetables in my own shadow like a cave person. I want to add under cabinet lighting and maybe some recessed cans, but I don’t know if that means cutting into the ceiling, pulling new wire, or if there’s some easier route I’m missing. Someone mentioned looking into Top lighting and outlet installation for Palo Alto homes since older houses here tend to have limited circuits, and now I’m worried one project turns into rewiring the whole floor. Has anyone added kitchen lighting to an older home and can tell me roughly what it involved? I’m mostly worried about the drywall and whether the electrician handles patching or if I need someone else for that part.
